This January I conducted video production workshops at two Lutheran schools in the West Bank. This video clip shows workshop participants wishing the world a “Happy New Year.” The clip was used in the workshop. The workshops were held at the Dar Al Kalima Lutheran School in Bethlehem and at the Evangelical Lutheran School of Beit Sahour and were organized by Sister Sylvia Countess, ELCA Global Mission assistant to ELCJHL schools director Dr. Charlie Haddad.

Thanks to Rembrandt

Long airport layovers are a travel downer. Amsterdam?s Schiphol Airport makes the wait more pleasant by teaming with the Rijksmuseum to offer travelers some 16th century Dutch eye candy. “Thanks to Rembrandt” is a free public exhibit that features samples of work from Rubens, Johannes Vermeer, Hans Bollongier and even Rembrandt himself. www.frakesproductions.com

New years day, 2009 will find me back in the Holy Land. I will be documenting the spiritual journey of seven American Christians as they visit various sites in and around Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah.
You can visit our team web site: 3 Faiths, 2, Countries, 1 Peace for more information, blog posts, photos and video clips as we travel. Kathleen Adam, leader of the group asked me to come along. Kathleen is a student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. This pilgrimage is part of her seminary program. The recorded footage will also be used to cut together a Spiritual Journey segment for 30 Good Minutes, on WTTW Channel 11 (PBS) in Chicago.

Ancient Philippi
Posted by timfrakes | Filed under Culture, Education, Interesting Places, Tim Frakes Productions, Travel
Ancient Philippi is in a valley about 15 kilometers north of the Aegean coast near the city of Kavala. It was a windy, chilly day and the place was mostly empty except for a team of archaeologists busily digging away near the Roman theater. Philippi features prominently in the New Testament. It was Paul and Silas first stop in Europe.
It is the place where they were thrown into prison, only to be rescued by an earthquake. Later, Paul wrote a letter to the Philippian church that ultimately made its way into the cannon of the New Testament. While in Philippi, Paul met a woman named Lydia. Lydia was a God fearer, a term Luke and Paul used to describe Greeks who sympathized and worshiped with Jews. The ruins are about half a mile from a small creek. The Bible mentions that Paul met Lydia as she was washing cloths by a river. So, I drove down to check out this famous location. It is nothing more than a drainage ditch that runs past a garbage dump!

Cricket a Wicket in Chicago Suburbs
Posted by timfrakes | Filed under Culture, News, Sports, Tim Frakes Productions
Wicket’s aplenty in suburban Chicago! Globalizations impact is easy to see these days. Bolingbrook, Illinois, is a relatively new, fast growing Chicago suburb of 56 thousand people located southwest of Lake Michigan.
On a recent Sunday, the town played host to a Cricket exhibition between teams representing India and Pakistan. . An estimated crowd of 1,500 fans gathered Indian Chase Meadows Park, to watch a short (five hour) 20/20 match.
Chicago is making a bid for the 2016 Olympics and organizers of this event hope that Cricket becomes an Olympic sport.
The Chicago area is home to a large Indo/Pakistani community. The friendly atmosphere between teams contrasts with heightened political tensions between India and Pakistan itself.
On this day, Pakistan prevailed, tallying 248 runs in the route. At the end, everyone shook hands and went home happy.

Chennai India after the Tsunami
Posted by timfrakes | Filed under Asia, Culture, News, Tim Frakes Productions, Travel
A month after the December 26, 2004 Tsunami that rocked countries bordering the Indian Ocean, I visited Chennai, India. Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is a city in Tamil Nadu. Chennai was hit by the wave, and was just beginning to recover when we arrived. Judging from this footage, it is hard to tell that anything happened at all. Scenes include a Shiva Temple, street traffic and the beach.
