In 1910 over a thousand Protestant missionaries, theologians and church leaders from around the world gathered in Edinburgh, Scotland for an unprecedented World Missionary Conference. Saving the World? chronicles the assumptions and expectations that Protestants carried into the 20th century and highlights some of the major — and unexpected — developments in the hundred years since that meeting in Scotland.

Glory to God Alone: The Life of J.S. Bach

Opening The Door to Luther with Rick Steves
Open the door to Martin Luther with public television travel host Rick Steves. He takes us to areas of Germany known as Lutherlands. From Eisleben, where Luther was born, to Wittenberg where he taught and preached, and to several other areas, we learn about the tumultuous events of the Reformation and the monk at the center of it all. We see how this Augustinian monk, who most wanted the quiet of a religious life, was thrust into the center of 16th-century world-shaking events.

The Morning Star of Wittenberg: The Life of Kaite Luther
This video documentary provides an intimate look at Katharina von Bora, former nun, 16th Century entrepreneur and wife of Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation. It is an in-depth look at the life of the woman who helped Luther change the course of history. We learn how she coped with incredible demands and survived the continual onslaught of unpredictable developments.

Zamzam: A Missionary Odyssey
A gripping, true story of faith on the high seas from World War II. An old Egyptian liner carrying 144 missionaries, bound for mission work in Africa, was mistakenly shelled and sunk by a Nazi warship off the coast of South Africa. The passengers abandoned ship, and their precarious plight was filmed by two photographers who just happened to be on board. Here is their amazing — and some would insist, miraculous — story.

Lives Of The Apostles Paul And Peter
In these two programs, author and Public Television travel expert Rick Steves takes us on location to explore the lives of two great apostles.

This is a series of 9 videos I produced for the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) about the waste water treatment process. I worked with my friend and former ELCA colleague, Stephen Padre. RCAP works with small, rural communities to assist them in improving environmental and community health, developing sustainable water and waste-disposal facilities, increasing the capability of local leaders to address current and future needs and being in compliance with federal and state regulations for utilities. Emmy lived with his mother and siblings on the outskirts of Kitgum. A bright student, Emmy worked his way into a management position at a store-front cafe on the main street of this dusty, provincial town. Not only did he run the store, he also served as an IT educator for friends and older Ugandan customers unfamiliar with the internet and computer technology.

After high school, Emmy enrolled in Gulu University and studied computer science. Despite considerable financial struggles, the burden of being the oldest male child, (Emmy’s father passed away several years earlier), theft of his computer and concerns about his mother’s health, Emmy emerged from Gulu with a bachelors degree.

Today Emmy serves as the IT manager for St. Josephs Hospital. In June, 2011, he launched their new web site. Check it out! http://www.sjhkitgum.org/

Emmy is a great example of the kind of talent, vision and energy possessed by many young Africans. He is a sign of hope in a world in need of something to hold on to.

The Consortium is a network of over 120 endowed parishes distinguished by innovative and effective programs and approaches to leadership education for lay and clergy in the Episcopal Church. The Consortium’s mission is to bring leaders from endowed parishes together to foster the development and use of endowments for mission and ministry in our communities and in the world.

January 12, 2010, Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Port Au Prince Haiti was destroyed by an earthquake. One year later, a youth orchestra rehearses in a shelter next to the ruined sanctuary. It is a sign of hope in Haiti.

Exploring a Century of Change: Protestant Missions, 1910-2010 is a documentary I produced for the Institute for the Study of American Evangelicals at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. In 1910 Protestant Missionary societies gathered in Edinburgh, Scotland to plan for missionary activity in the next century. This is the story of how things turned out and where Protestant missions are headed in the 21st century.
