It is Advent and a good time to reflect on the life of Jesus. This production aired on ABC Television in December 2006. I produced it for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America with my good friend Peter Marty as host. Jim Quattrocki directed the on-camera sequences. Jim Parks did the editing.

Holy Land in the Shadow of War

This holiday season found me in the Holy Land. I was invited by a friend, Kathy Adam, to tag along as she lead a group of Minnesota pilgrims on a visit to Jerusalem, Bethlehem and other places in Israel and the West Bank.
It was a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, visit with old friends and experience life for average people during a time of war. While never in any personal danger, we did experience the war in Gaza through the eyes of many Palestinian families.

New years day, 2009 will find me back in the Holy Land. I will be documenting the spiritual journey of seven American Christians as they visit various sites in and around Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah.
You can visit our team web site: 3 Faiths, 2, Countries, 1 Peace for more information, blog posts, photos and video clips as we travel. Kathleen Adam, leader of the group asked me to come along. Kathleen is a student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. This pilgrimage is part of her seminary program. The recorded footage will also be used to cut together a Spiritual Journey segment for 30 Good Minutes, on WTTW Channel 11 (PBS) in Chicago.

Augusta Victoria Hospital 2008

My friend the Rev. Mark Brown, is the Lutheran World Federation Regional Representative in Jerusalem. Last February, Mark asked me to help out with a promotional video for the Augusta Victoria Hospital.
The Lutheran World Federation’s Augusta Victoria Hospital has served Palestinian refugees since 1950. The mission of Augusta Victoria Hospital is to alleviate human suffering, promote peace and civil society, provide health care without regard to race, creed, gender, or national origin, provide services for those in social need with priority services to Palestinian refugees and commit to the development and maintenance of the highest standard of diagnostic and clinical service.
In honor of his wife, Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany built Augusta Victoria in 1910, as a hospice and rest home on the Mount of Olives, overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem.

A Walk from the Mount of Olives to the Old City

Visit with Christians of the Holy Land

My former boss, the Rev. Eric Shafer has asked me to join him and a group of clergy from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on a visit to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. This is my sixth trip to Israel/Palestine. I’ll be documenting the journey and recording some new footage for a program I am producing for the ELCA’s Peace Not Walls project. We will be staying inside the Old City at the Lutheran Guest House near the Holy Sepulchre in the Christian quarter.
The goal of the journey is to support Christians in the Holy Land, worship with them and visit a few of their ministries. Many Americans assume that all Palestinians are Muslim. In fact, Palestinian Christians trace their history back to the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). Look to this site for updates as our journey unfolds, February 1-5, 2008.
