Proud of my Ugandan Friend Emmy
Posted by timfrakes | Filed under Africa, Education, Interesting People, News, Peace and Justice, Tim Frakes Productions
I first met Akoch Emmanuel (Emmy), managing an internet cafe in Kitgum, Uganda in 2006. At the time, Northern Uganda was in the final stages of a 21 year civil war that saw hundreds of thousands forced into Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps. More than 20,000 children were abducted from villages and forced to join militants as sex slaves or soldiers. To avoid capture, children would leave their defenseless villages at night and congregate in city parks, back alleys and spartan night shelters.
Emmy lived with his mother and siblings on the outskirts of Kitgum. A bright student, Emmy worked his way into a management position at a store-front cafe on the main street of this dusty, provincial town. Not only did he run the store, he also served as an IT educator for friends and older Ugandan customers unfamiliar with the internet and computer technology.
After high school, Emmy enrolled in Gulu University and studied computer science. Despite considerable financial struggles, the burden of being the oldest male child, (Emmy’s father passed away several years earlier), theft of his computer and concerns about his mother’s health, Emmy emerged from Gulu with a bachelors degree.
Today Emmy serves as the IT manager for St. Josephs Hospital. In June, 2011, he launched their new web site. Check it out! http://www.sjhkitgum.org/
Emmy is a great example of the kind of talent, vision and energy possessed by many young Africans. He is a sign of hope in a world in need of something to hold on to.

This is a video I shot in Port Au Prince two weeks after the January 12, 2010 earthquake. After Hurricane Tomas rolled through this November, I wonder what happened to the good folks at living in Viva Rio. Viva Rio is a Brazilian non-governmental organization working in Haiti since 2004. Viva Rio is a partner with Norwegian Church Aid, a member of the Act Alliance. Following the January 2010 earthquake in Port Au Prince, Viva Rio organized an emergency shelter community providing tents, water, social services and sanitation.

Iraqi Voices Amplification Project

I am excited to announce that on October 1st, I leave with a group of artists for a three week trip through Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Even better, I want you to come with us!
As part of the Iraqi Voices Amplification Project, Intersections International has brought together a delegation of creative artists, for a trip to meet with Iraqi refugees and various humanitarian agencies. We’ve created the Iraqi Voices Amplification Project Blog (www.intersectionsinternational.org/iraqivoices) to share our daily experiences with you. We will post video clips, audio interview files, photographs and reflections. You will also find complete biographies about the other artists as well as the history of the project to date. Please subscribe, check in daily and share your own reflections with us.
The Iraqi Voices Amplification project will lift up the stories of Iraqi refugees who have been forced to leave their homes and country as a result of the current “Global War on Terror.” The Iraqi refugee crisis is one of the most underreported humanitarian crises in recent history.
An estimated 5 million Iraqis have been displaced from their homes, many living as illegal migrants abroad, unable to work or access health care and other social services.
Intersections International reached out to us and we have all formed a group of story-tellers, dancers, musicians, journalists, playwrights and photographers to gain a more complete understanding of this crisis and then help tell the story. Once we return to New York we’ll craft a multi-media presentation about our experience. We hope you’ll join us for the journey. Sign up for the Intersections newsletter to get updates as we travel and about this project.
You can do even more with us on the trip. To help offset the cost of our travel, room and board you can donate to Intersections International. For donations of $50 or more, we’ll send you a postcard from our trip. For donations of $100 or more, we’ll also give you a shout-out on the blog as a project “Amplifier!” To support the work of Intersections International and the Iraqi Voices Amplification Project go to:

Holy Land in the Shadow of War

This holiday season found me in the Holy Land. I was invited by a friend, Kathy Adam, to tag along as she lead a group of Minnesota pilgrims on a visit to Jerusalem, Bethlehem and other places in Israel and the West Bank.
It was a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, visit with old friends and experience life for average people during a time of war. While never in any personal danger, we did experience the war in Gaza through the eyes of many Palestinian families.
The following video is a compilation of footage and interviews I recorded during our time in the Holy Land. For more on the trip visit a web site I built:

Just One Question
Posted by timfrakes | Filed under Causes
Only two questions about global poverty have been asked in the history of modern presidential debates – a shockingly low figure. In 2008, voters need to know what Barack Obama and John McCain will do to end the most extreme suffering in our increasingly interconnected world.
